Hi, I’m Matt Evans.

Hi, I’m Matt Evans, founder and developer of Birdies & Alibis. I’m based in Utah and have been playing golf for more than 30 years—although that definitely doesn’t make me an expert.

For about 20 of those years, I’ve played in informal leagues and golf groups with friends, and more recently in a men’s league. Along the way, I’ve helped with scoring, tracking results, organizing events and tournaments, and many of the other jobs that happen behind the scenes.

A familiar problem

I kept seeing the same thing.

I kept seeing the same problem. Schedules lived in emails and text messages. Rules and event details were difficult to find later. Scorecards had to be collected and results calculated.

Golfers repeatedly asked: When are we playing? What course is it? What are the rules?

And the person running everything was usually doing a lot more work than anyone realized.

Where the idea started

Golf met process improvement.

My career has centered around process improvement—finding ways to make complicated things simpler and eliminate unnecessary work.

Eventually those two worlds came together.

I originally built Birdies & Alibis to make my own friends’ league easier to run, give the organizer some of his time back, and give everyone one place to find the information they needed.

Where it started. Birdies & Alibis grew out of the same kind of golf groups it was built to serve—friends trying to spend more time playing and less time organizing.

The product philosophy

Support the game. Don’t get in its way.

Birdies & Alibis isn’t meant to make golf more complicated or force every golfer to stare at a phone.

Some golfers want to use an app. Others still want a scorecard and a pencil. That’s fine.

The goal is to make the work surrounding golf easier—schedules, communication, scoring, standings, games and events—while letting golfers enjoy the game the way they want to.

If Birdies & Alibis can give the person organizing the league a little more time, reduce a few unnecessary emails and texts, and let everyone spend more time enjoying golf, then it’s doing what I built it to do.
